UPSC IAS Eligibility
Candidates must be aware of the guidelines set by UPSC to get permission to sit for the IAS.
Nationality
The candidates need to be an
An Indian citizen or,
A subject of Bhutan or Nepal or,
A Tibetan refugee who migrated to India before 1st January 1962 to settle in the country permanently or,
An Indian person who has come over from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Zaire, or Vietnam to settle in India on a permanent note.
The point to note is, the Indian Government must issue the particular candidate with an eligibility certificate.
Notably, subjects from Nepal or Bhutan aren't eligible to apply for IFS.
Age
The applicant’s age should be 21 years minimum, whereas the maximum age restriction is 32 years. There are age relaxations available for reserved category candidates. The aspirants can check details from the official site of UPSC.
Educational Qualification
The aspirants need to have a bachelor's degree in any stream from any recognized university. Even students who are waiting for their final year results can apply. However, they must show their reports of the requisite exam while applying for mains.
UPSC IAS Selection Process

The candidates must successfully register for the IAS entrance as soon as the notification is released.

Eligible candidates will sit for the prelims (objective-based) to qualify for the mains.

The mains (written descriptive and interview) are the final stages to select candidates.

Based on the merit list, candidates are recruited to the respective vacancies.

Before joining, the candidates need to undergo a medical test to prove their physical fitness. UPSC sets the list of hospitals in this regard.

Is IAS hard to crack?
The most attempted entrance in India is the IAS entrance, and cracking the same is utterly prestigious. It is challenging to crack IAS but not impossible. Many aspirants have cracked it in the first attempt itself. They need to prepare in a structured manner, take up coaching at a reputed center and need to grow high knowledge regarding the current affairs, and everything related to the syllabus.
Are there age relaxation available for candidates in the IAS entrance?
Yes, there are upper age relaxations provided to the reserved category students. For SC/ST candidates, the period is five years, whereas, for OBC candidates, the figure is 3. Relaxation is provided to other categories as well.
What is the maximum number of attempts to give the IAS entrance?
Any General category student can attempt a maximum of six times to crack the IAS. However, the figures aren't the same with reserved category candidates. Students can visit the website for details.
Why is a medical test conducted post-IAS recruitment?
The shortlisted candidates must undergo a medical exam in the allotted hospitals by UPSC. The medical test is held to assess candidates in their physical fitness—the ones passing this stage.
