Waiting for the 2020 SBI PO notification? With the State Bank of India set to invite applications for the post of Probationary Officers across the country, candidates have already begun preparing for the same. However, just in case you are one of the many individuals who are yet to kick start their preparation for the highly-acclaimed examination, familiarizing yourself with the SBI PO Exam Pattern and Recruitment Process should be the first milestone for you in your journey.
For just that, we have brought for you a detailed analysis of the exam pattern, or shall we say recruitment process that takes place every year for the selection of talented, capable, and passionate POs for various SBI branches across the country.
The journey of the SBI PO will begin with filling the form for the recruitment. SBI will then release the admit cards for the Preliminary Examination, which will be followed by the Mains Examination and Interview. Following are the different stages of SBI PO recruitment.

Preliminary Examination
Once the application deadline is gone, and the exam date is near, SBI releases the admit cards for the Preliminary Examination. The Preliminary Examination, which is the first stage of the SBI PO recruitment process, is qualifying in nature, and marks scored in it are not added to the scorecard that is used to prepare the final merit list. In simplest of terms, the Preliminary Examination is a screening test for filtering capable candidates for the Mains Examination.
As for the exam pattern, the Preliminary Examination consists of 3 different sections - Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language. The total accommodated time is 60 minutes, with each section having its time limit as well.

SBI releases the Preliminary Examination result soon after the conduct of the same. Along with the overall cut-off marks, candidates are also required to secure minimum passing marks in each section. 1 mark is awarded for every correct answer, while a penalty of 0.25 is inflicted for each incorrect answer. Unanswered questions do not attract any negative marking. Lastly, candidates equalling 10 times the number of vacancies in each category are promoted to the next stage, the Mains Examination.
Mains Examination
The Mains Examinations, which is the second stage of the SBI PO recruitment process, is also held in online mode. Incorporating four sections, namely Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, English Language, and Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, the exam features a time limit of 3 hours.

Following the computer-based test, the second round also requires the candidates to appear for a Descriptive Test, which involves Letter Writing & Essay. The Descriptive Test carries 50 marks and features a time limit of 30 minutes. Similar to the Preliminary Examination, the Mains Exam also carries a penalty of 0.25 for each incorrect answer.
Interview
Moving ahead, candidates who clear the Mains Examination are called for a Group Discussion and Personal Interview session in the presence of a panel of selectors, who ask questions related to not only the Banking Sector but also General Knowledge and life experiences. The Group Discussion and Personal Interview carry 20 and 30 marks, respectively. It is important for a candidate to do well in the third stage as it plays a vital role in the overall scorecard, which is used to form the final merit list.
Appointment Letter
In case you manage to make it to the final merit list, SBI will share with you the Appointment Letter for the post of Probationary Officer. As mentioned before, the final merit list is prepared taking into consideration the marks obtained in the Mains Examination and the GD-Personal Interview.
