IIM Rohtak Director, Prof Dheeraj Sharma has raised a request with the regulatory authority of CAT and also with IIM-Indore CAT conducting authority, that the CAT 2020 should be conducted in all regional languages. Currently, CAT is conducted only in the English language. CAT is considered to be one of the most sought-after exams to get admission to top business schools including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
In accordance with some reliable sources who are wary of this fact, it is confirmed that Dheeraj Sharma has written an application to IIM-Indore director, Himanshu Rai. It is said that the application mentions that one of the aims of National Education Policy is to promote learning and propagating regional languages, hence this national level CAT exam should be conducted in regional languages as well. As a matter of fact, more than 2,00,000 students take up the CAT exam every year.
Dheeraj Sharma also wrote in his letter about allowing students to pursue courses in management in any of the languages mentioned in Schedule VII. Himanshu Rai, who co-ordinates the conduct of CAT, shall take up this matter with the core committee of examination.
The main motive behind writing this application that many students are not very proficient in the English language, and this refrains them from taking up higher education in management. Thus, promoting exams and courses in regional languages will prove a boon to such students.
Importantly, IIM director’s letter was written at a time when the Union education ministry is looking at ways to promote higher education in Indian languages. The languages included in Schedule VIII of the Indian Constitution are Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Maithili, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
