In a frantic decision, the Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya in Bhopal has cancelled the exams that were supposed to begin from June 23, 2020. While the university had already released the time table for the practical and theory exams to be conducted from June 16 and June 23, respectively, the state government then issued a notification on June 15 postponing all the under-graduate and post-graduate exams.
A lot of students and travelled from their home towns to Bhopal only in order to write their exams. The students, who had somehow managed to get hold of accommodation and food for themselves now, however, remain agonised as the exams have been postponed until further notice.
"Now, tell me where should I go. We came here by train with great difficulty from UP, Bihar, and other states. We were staying at friends' and relatives' places. As exams are postponed, we are now stuck up in Bhopal", said Vinita Samuel a student.
While the Madhya Pradesh government was adamant on not promoting the students without conducting exams, the colleges, on the other hand, have reported that even teachers and other staff were not willing to attend the exams. Moreover, the seating space was also an area of concern, as only 20 students were allowed to sit in a classroom. The decision of conducting exams was strongly opposed by both students and teachers due to the danger of them contracting the infection.
Reports also suggest that students not residing in the university's jurisdiction were given the option of writing their exams later in time.
"When the entire world was trying its best to avoid gathering to keep COVID away, MP went on declaring exam schedule. They had to cancel as situation was not favourable. But at the end it is we the students who are facing trouble", said Vikrant Verma.
