The intensity of China's border issues with various countries has, once again, gone up, as Japan has changed the name of a disputed region in the East China Sea. Known as Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands, the disputed territory has recently witnessed its name changed by Japan from Tonoshiro to Tonoshiro Senkaku.
Senkaku Islands is an uninhabited region spread over around 7 sq.km and located northeast of Taiwan, where it is known as Tiaoyutai. While the region is being administered by Japan since 1972, it is still claimed by both China and Japan to date.
Japan states that the name has been changed to resolve administrative confusion between a locale in downtown Ishigaki, which shares a name similar to that of the Tonoshiro Island. Besides, the support of the USA courtesy of a mutual defence treaty with Japan gives Japan a stronghold in the dispute. According to the treaty, the USA has to defend Japan whenever its territory is under attack.
Moreover, China's presence near the islands has led Japan to change the name of the region and, in turn, ensure more protection to the same. China's take on the issue is, interestingly, aggressive yet defensive. According to China, the bill by the local council in Southern Japan may possess a serious provocation to China’s territorial sovereignty, and hence, the change in the name is an illegal practice.
China, however, has also asked Japan to abide by the Four-Principle Consensus, which was approved in 2014. This consensus was approved to develop an interdependent relationship supporting common strategic interests. China has also warned Japan about the instability that may occur in the East China Sea because of the move.
This crisis can be seen as a significant and strategically important event for India. Taiwan, on one hand, his supporting India regarding the India-China face-off in the Galwan Valley, whereas, on the other hand, is opposing Japan over changing the name of a region on the Senkaku Islands. India's decision of supporting Japan in the Senkaku Islands dispute can help India in strengthening its position in Galwan valley, and since China is augmenting its naval power to possess a control in the Indian Ocean, this step by Japan can further aid India in establishing a stronger position in the Indian Ocean.
