Ever since Hindi received the status of an Official Language on the 14th of September 1949, India celebrates the day as the “Hindi Diwas”. Besides, with the passage of time and the rapid growth of native speakers, Hindi has now become the fourth most spoken language in the country. Moreover, if we take into consideration the overall number of speakers around the world, Hindi grabs the third spot on the list. On the occasion of Hindi Diwas 2020, here are some interesting facts about one of the 22 official languages of India:
* Hindi was given the status of an official language on September 14, 1949.
* The word Hindi comes from the Persian word “Hind”, which stands for the “land of the river Indus”.
* World Hindi Conference was organised in Nagpur on 10 जनवरी 1975. Representatives from 122 countries took part in the event.
* Around 77% of the total population of India can speak, read, and write Hindi.
* With approximately 75-80 crore speakers, Hindi is now the fourth most spoken language in the world.
* The world “Hindi Diwas” is observed on January 10 every year. It was first celebrated in 2006.
* Hindi is taught at as many as 176 universities around the globe.
* Hindi speakers can be found in various countries and regions such as Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Uganda, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, Canada, England, USA, and the Middle East.
* Hindi has been given the status of an official language in Fiji. It is called Fijian Hindi over there.
