WBCSC Overview

The West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) was established in the year 1979. Its main functions are to select and recommend Assistant Professors, Librarians, and Principals to all Government Colleges in West Bengal, through the State Eligibility Test (SET). 

Exams Conducted by WBCSC

WBCSC conducts the State Eligibility Test (SET) for the recruitment of Assistant Professors across all the universities in West Bengal. Candidates who qualify the SET exam with the minimum required percentage shall become eligible for the post of Assistant Professor.

WBCSC Exam Calendar

WBCSC releases an official notification every year on the official portal with details regarding the SET exam. The notification includes details of the exam date, number of posts for which the exam is conducted, and other technical specifications. For 2020 recruitment, the official notification is released in the month of November 2020.

WBCSC Exam Dates

The important dates pertaining to the SET exam are as follows:

  1. The online application window for the WBCSC SET exam shall be open from November 2020 to December 2020.
  2. The WBCSC SET exam is scheduled to be held in January 2021.
  3. The WBCSC SET exam result is scheduled to be declared in July 2021.
  4. For 2021 recruitment, the online application window shall be open from August 2021 to September 2021.
  5. The tentative date of the WBCSC SET exam for 2021 is scheduled to be held in December 2021.

WBCSC Exam Eligibility

The official notification for the SET exam specifies the eligibility criteria and all aspiring candidates should check whether they fulfill the eligibility norms before filing up the examination form.

  1. Age: Candidates from all age groups can appear for the SET exam, there is no age bar or upper age limit criteria.

 

  1. Educational Qualification: 
  • The candidate must possess a post-graduation degree, recognized by U.G.C.
  • The candidates who have managed to attain at least 55% marks in their post-graduation degree or possess an equivalent degree from any UGC recognized university or institution.
  • Ph.D. degree holders who have also completed their Master’s examination.

 

WBCSC Exam Pattern

All aspiring candidates should be aware of the exam pattern to get a comprehensive idea about the syllabus, subjects, types of questions, and weightage of each subject.

The SET exam has two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2 and are conducted on the same day in two different sessions. 

Paper 1 is of total 100 marks and the time allowed is 1 hour. Paper 2 is of 200 marks and the time allowed is 2 hours.

SET is a written exam conducted in offline mode and the candidates will have to mark their responses on an OMR sheet. The cut-off shall be declared based on the aggregate marks secured by the candidates in both the papers.

Q1. What are the minimum qualifying marks for the SET exam?

The minimum percentage of marks to be qualified in WBCSC SET exam are as follows:

General-40%

OBC-35%

SC/ST-35%

 

Q2. Does PhD degree holders have any advantage in WB SET?

PhD holders are eligible to apply for WB SET in case they have obtained 55% marks in MSc, but the candidate should at-least have 50% marks in aggregate.

Q3. How many candidates qualify WB SET every year?

6% of the candidates are declared qualified if they score above cut-off percentage. 

Q4. Candidates who have cleared UGC NET before 1989 are eligible to appear for SET 2020?

Candidates who have cleared the UGC/CSIR JRF exam prior to 1989 do not need to appear for WB SET. They can directly apply for the post of assistant professor or lecturer posts based on their UGC NET score.
