With two key education boards, CBSE and CISCE, deciding to cancel the remaining board exams and many other state boards following their suit, the IITs are now considering to drop the "75% marks in Class 12" criterion as a one time measure.
Every year, the rank holder students from the unreserved category are required to score at least 75% marks, or they have to feature in the top 20 percentile of the Board results to secure a seat at an IIT. For the SC/ST rank holders, the candidates have to score at least 65% or fulfil the top 20 percentile requirement.
According to a member, Class 12 marks rarely affect the students and don't play the role of a make-it or break-it criterion. "There are very few rank holders who are denied admission every year for either not scoring a minimum of 75 per cent marks or meeting the top 20 percentile cut-off. So, doing away (with this criterion) for one admission cycle isn’t going to make a big difference", the member said.
The interruption in the board exams was discussed at a meeting of the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC), earlier this month. The JIC is made up of JEE chairpersons from all the IITs. JEE chairpersons during the meeting came at a conclusion that the criterion of percentage in the boards should be discarded for the session 2020-21.
"There was a consensus that the IITs, instead, should insist on rank holders to have passed their Board exams this year", said a JIC member who did not wish to be identified. "This would be a one-time exception", the member added.
However, the idea proposed at the JIC meeting cannot be implemented without a nod from the Joint Admission Board’s (JAB) approval. The JAB has directors of all the IITs and representatives of the HRD Ministry as its members. IITs are also worried bout conducting JEE exams for foreign students at foreign locations like Dhaka, Dubai, Kathmandu, and Singapore as different restrictions are imposed at different geographical locations due to ongoing health crisis. The JEE Main exam will be conducted between September 1 and September 6, 2020.
