Every year, the world celebrates September 27 as the World Tourism Day. Over the years, tourism has not only fed adventure-hungry souls but also shown us how the masses from around the world can unite and prosper hand in hand. This year, however, circumstances are least favourable for travelling as life on Earth continues to move forward under the impact of the novel COVID-19.
With that said, once the situation improves and it becomes feasible to travel, tourism is going to prove as one of the more important pillars of resurrection for the revival of the world's economy. So, with various authorities easing down the travel restrictions and the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine approaching us, it's safe to say that world tourism will flourish sooner than later and help the lives of many to back on track.
World Tourism Day 2020 - Theme
This year, the theme for the World Tourism Day is "Tourism and Rural Development", for tourism provides rural communities around the world with an array of opportunities for business and employment. Since tourism has hit rock bottom this year, rural regions with economies that are heavily dependent on tourism are in dire need of things getting back to normal for their economies get back on feet. The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has reported 100 to 120 million jobs in the tourism industry to be at risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, we believe there couldn't have been a better theme than "Tourism and Rural Development" for the World Tourism Day 2020.
World Tourism Day 2020 - Celebration
To signify the spirit of international unity that comes through tourism, UNWTO has given the opportunity of conducting the celebration of World Tourism Day 2020 to MERCOSUR member states (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, with Chile as a member associate status). In the last 40 years, it was always a member state of the United Nations specialized agency that celebrated World Tourism Day.
Lastly, we hope things get better sooner than later, and people are back at exploring different places, cultures, communities, food, and all the things unexplored. With the rural regions across the planet bearing a hard hit due to the COVID-19 outbreak, tourism prospering in the same will come as a relief for the rural communities, especially woman and youth.
Happy travels!
