SSC Overview
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organisation working under the monitoring of the Government of India. The main motive behind establishing the commission was to recruit potential candidates for various posts for various Ministries and Departments and the subordinate offices of the Government.
The SSC body is an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training, consisting of a Chairman, two members and a Secretary. In the year 1975, with recommendations from the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, the Government of India set up a regulatory body known as the Subordinate Service Commission. Later in 1977, this commission was renamed to the Staff Selection Commission. Every year, SSC conducts various examinations for various government posts and recruits candidates to gazetted and non-gazetted posts.

SSC Exams Calendar
The SSC Exam dates for the year 2020 recruitment drive are released in the SSC Exams calendar. A notification was released on 7th October 2020 on the official portal of SSC with all the relevant details and revised dates regarding various SSC cadre examinations. Since the SSC examination dates are subject to change from time to time, hence the candidates are advised to keep checking the official portal for recent updates. SSC Exams dates
The important SSC examination dates are as follows:

SSC CGL exam was earlier scheduled between October 14 -October 17, 2020, and has now been revised to be held on November 2, 2020.

SSC CHSL exam is now scheduled to be held on October 12, 2020 onwards.

SSC JE exam was earlier scheduled on April 2, 2020 is now revised to be held on October 27, 2020.

SSC CPO exam notification was released on June 17, 2020, but the examination date is not yet disclosed.

SSC Stenographer exam was earlier scheduled to be held on May 5, 2020 has now been revised to be held on November 16, 2020.

SSC Junior Hindi Translator exam is scheduled to be held on November 19, 2020.

SSC Multitasking Non-Technical exam is scheduled to be held between July 1 to July 21, 2021.
Vacancies for Various SSC Exams
The vacancies for various cadre and posts of the SSC are decided by the Commission and its members. The SSC vacancies are mentioned below for the following exams:

The tentative number of vacancies for the cadre of SSC CGL is 8582.

The number of vacancies released for the cadre of SSC CHSL is 4893.

In 2019, the total number of vacancies announced for the SSC Stenographer Grade C & D exam was 1,464, out of which 473 were for Stenographer Grade C and 991 for Stenographer Grade D. The tentative vacancies for the year 2020 are likely to remain the same.

The number of vacancies for the post of SSC JE is 887.

The number of vacancies for the post of SSC CPO is 1564.

For the year 2020, 275 vacancies are announced for the post of SSC Junior Hindi Translator.

Combined for all the regions, total 7099 vacancies are released for SSC Multitasking examination.
SSC Exams Eligibility
It is very important to check for the eligibility criteria before applying for the examination. A candidate should be aware of whether he is falling under the eligible category so that the application has no chance of getting rejected afterwards. The major requisites for eligibility classification are with respect to age, nationality and educational qualification. For various SSC exams pertaining to different cadres and posts, the following are the eligibility criteria that the candidates should fall into:

Nationality: Candidate must be a Citizen of either India or Nepal or Bhutan. If a candidate is a citizen of Nepal or Bhutan shall have a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Age: The minimum age requirement of the candidate is 18 years and the maximum age for some cadres is 27 years and for some, it is 32 years.

Educational Qualification: The basic requirement is a pass certificate for class 12th from any recognized university or institution. For some cadres, the requirement also specifies a bachelor’s degree in any one core subject.

1. When does the Commission upload its Exam Calendar?
The Annual Examination Calendar by the SSC is generally uploaded in the month of September or October of the current year on the official SSC portal.
2. When is the notice or advertisement of an SSC Examination issued?
Tentative dates for issue of notifications pertaining to different Examinations by SSC, are contained in the Annual Examination Calendar. Candidates are suggested to regularly visit the website of the Commission for latest updates.
3. Does the SSC Commission entertain requests for changing the dates of exams in case of clashes with exams of other organisations?
The Commission strictly does not entertain any request for change of dates of its examination in cases of clashing with examination dates of any other organization. The Commission does not even entertain requests for changing the Examination Centre and Examination Shift.
4. Is Registration compulsory for applying to the examinations of the Commission?
Yes, One-Time Registration on the SSC Portal is a mandatory requirement. On completion of One-Time Registration, candidates can apply online for any examination that is conducted by the Commission.
5. How to apply for examinations conducted by the Commission?
After publication of notification of a particular examination, you can login using your Registration Number’ and ‘SSC Registration Password’ on the official website. Click on the Examination Link you wish to apply for under the latest notification Section. Read the notice very carefully before applying for any examination.
